Shelving is made of a variety of different materials, glass being among them. When hanging glass shelves on a wall, there is more to consider than the simple basics of hanging shelves made of wood or other materials. You can’t attach a hook or bracket to the shelf with a screw or other fastener, and you also have to take the weight of the material into consideration. Glass shelving is heavy and must be supported. But if you know what you are doing, you’ll be able to safely hang glass shelves on your wall with ease.
 
Supporting Glass Shelves:
Choose the appropriate thickness of glass shelving. Select a thickness that will support the items you plan to put on the shelf, and a thickness that will make the glass remain intact between the wall supports. For example, if it’s too thin, the weight of the glass could break the shelf. The most popular thickness for glass shelving is 6.35 mm and 9.50 mm, according to the Glass Design Malta. For reference, a 60-cm piece of 6.35-mm glass shelving that is 15.2 cm deep with a support fastener on each end would support about 6.8 kg. The farther the space between supports, the less the shelf will hold.
Obtain fasteners that are designed to support glass shelving. Purchase the type that correlates with the thickness of glass you are using. Ensure you have enough wall-mounted fasteners to give adequate support to the shelf and the planned load on the shelf.
Mark the place on the wall where you want your glass shelf to hang. Make a small mark on the wall where you want one end of the shelf. Begin at that mark and measure the distance to the other end of the shelving, using the tape measure. Make a mark at that location. Use a level to ensure the marks are the same height from the floor. Draw a line between the two marks, using a pencil. This is the guide for attaching the fasteners to the wall.
Screw the mounting fasteners to the wall at the appropriate increments along the line, using wood screws. Screw the fasteners into the studs in the wall. Use a stud finder, if necessary.
Insert the glass shelving into the fasteners so that the glass is stable.
